Royal Ascot Day 2 - on the Hunt for winners

Philippos followers did their betting banks no harm yesterday when 14/1 winner Motakhayyel won the opening race at behind-closed-doors Royal Ascot 2020.

Another tip, Frankly Darling (11/8f) also dotted up making it a 1-2 for my suggestions in the Ribblesdale with each-way suggestion Ennistymon (11/1) chasing her home.

We'll need some cash reserves today with three big handicaps to get stuck into, including, the Royal Hunt Cup plus a one-off consolation race for this year: the Silver Royal Hunt Cup.

Jim Crowley, with a big-race treble, was the jockey to follow yesterday and there were wins each for Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore. Both are likely to add to their tallies over the coming week.

With thunderstorms forecast across the UK, the going could change dramatically during the course of this afternoon. At 6am on Wednesday morning the going was good (on the straight course) with a mixture of good and soft on the round course.

In the UK, you can follow just about all the action on terrestrial TV c/o ITV Racing. The broadcaster is making a great fist of its coverage despite the empty grandstands and strict social distancing measures that apply to jockeys and trainers.

Hopefully Philippos can deliver another winner or two today. Good luck. I'm here all week! (Follow me on Twitter: @moneyandmedia).

PHILIPPOS

Royal Ascot Wednesday 17 June 2020

Going: good, good-to-soft in places (thundery showers forecast)

As these are crazy Covid times, I'm suggesting three bets per race: 1) a selection with a good chance of winning; 2) an each-way suggestion capable of out-running his or her odds; 3) where the fields are large enough, an "exotic", a combination bet that can produce huge dividends for a small outlay.

Eg, a 50p combination exacta of three different horses (that requires two of the three selections to place first and second) costs £3. A 50p combination trifecta of three horses costs the same, but you need to place first, second AND third.

NAP: First Receiver
NB: Lord Tennyson

1.15 Silver Royal Hunt Cup Handicap 1 mile
This is one of the extra consolation races added to this year's Royal Ascot as a one-off. A 23-runner cavalry charge, it may pay to side with those drawn high who can race down the stands' (near) side of the course

Win: Maydanny
Each-way: Almufti
Life-changer: combination exacta, Maydanny, Almufti, Sir Busker

1.50 Hampton Court Stakes Group 3 1 mile 2 furlongs
A race for 3yo just short of the highest class. The presence of Kenzai Warrior in the field is the first chance to test the form of the recently re-scheduled 2,000 Guineas where he finished 9th of 15 following an awkward start.

Win: First Receiver
Each-way: King Carney

2.25 King George V Stakes Handicap 1 mile 4 furlongs
Big field of 3yo handicappers so expect plenty of scrimmaging for position as they come round the home turn.

Win: To Nathaniel
Each-way: Group One Power
Life-changer: combination exacta, To Nathaniel, Group One Power, Convict

3.00 Prince Of Wales's Stakes Group 1 1 mile 2 furlongs
Day two highlight featuring a small, but select, seven-runner field. Will the return to 10 furlongs faze the likely favourite, Japan?

Win: Addeyb
Each-way: Lord North

3.35 Royal Hunt Cup Handicap 1 mile
A proper cavalry charge of a race where the draw may yet play a part. Is the favourite, Lord Tennyson, a future Group horse lurking in a handicap? He's from the right yard. With so many runners (24 declared) I'm going for the luxury of two each-way selections.

Win: Lord Tennyson
Each-way: Bell Rock, Beatboxer
Game-changer: combination trifecta, Lord Tennyson, Bell Rock, Beatboxer

4.10 Windsor Castle Stakes Listed 5 furlongs
The first two-year-old race of the rescheduled meeting. The presence of a US runner will ensure there's no hanging about for these raw sprinting types.

Win: Chief Little Hawk
Each-way: Mighty Gurkha
Life-changer: combination exacta, Chief Little Hawk, Mighty Gurkha, Tactical

4.40 Copper Horse Handicap 1 mile 6 furlongs
Another extra race for this year's unique meeting; a long-distance stamina-test to finish the day.

Win: Selino
Each-way: Shailene
Life-changer: combination exacta, Selino, Shailene, Collide
