Royal Ascot Day 5 - Diamond on my mind

Day four of Royal Ascot 2020 was a profitable one for Philippos's followers with wins both for The Lir Jet and Fanny Logan at 9/2 and 17/2 respectively, plus each-way suggestion Lambeth Walk making it into the frame in the opener at a tasty 33/1.

Today is a stellar day of racing featuring no less than eight contests and three Group 1s. The weather looks set fair and it would be splendid (not to mention wallet-boosting) to go out in style with a win or two after this unique week. In the heart of lockdown, to think that Royal Ascot would even have taken place at all was a 10/1 shot and drifting. The organisers can be very pleased with how events have panned out.

Don't forget, UK racing fans can follow the action on terrestrial TV c/o ITV Racing. The broadcaster is doing its best to make viewers feel part of the Royal Ascot action, despite the empty grandstands and strict social distancing measures that apply to jockeys and trainers.

Hopefully, Philippos can play his part as well and deliver some successful selections. Good luck! (Follow me on Twitter: @moneyandmedia).

Royal Ascot Saturday 20 June 2020

Going: good-to-soft (straight course). Soft, good-to-soft in places (round course)

As these are crazy Covid times, I'm suggesting three bets per race: 1) a selection with a good chance of winning; 2) an each-way suggestion or two capable of out-running his or her odds; 3) where the fields are large enough, an "exotic", a combination bet that can produce huge dividends for a small outlay.

Eg, a 50p combination exacta of three different horses (that requires two of the three selections to place first and second) costs £3. A 50p combination trifecta of three horses costs the same, but you need to place first, second AND third.

NAP: More Beautiful
NB: Admiral Nelson

12.40 Silver Wokingham Handicap 6 furlongs
Just the mere 24 runners to sift through where pace and draw will play their part. This is basically a one-off consolation race for the Wokingham proper that takes place later on the card.

Win: Blue Mist
Each-way: Count D'orsay, Swindler
Life-changer: combination exacta, Blue Mist, Count D'orsay, Swindler

1.15 Queen Mary Stakes Group 2 5 furlongs
A right old speed test for juvenile (2yo) fillies only. Most of these runners have only raced once in their lives so the market may as good a guide to picking the winner as any deep trawl through their racing pedigrees.

Win: More Beautiful
Each-way: Sands Of Time, Sardinia Sunset
Life-changer: combination exacta, More Beautiful, Sands Of Time, Sardinia Sunset

1.50 Coventry Stakes 6 furlongs
One of the great mid-summer juvenile contests for colts and geldings. The winner can expect to be catapulted to the head of the betting for next year's Classic, the 2,000 Guineas.

Win: Admiral Nelson
Each-way: Creative Force, Talbot
Life-changer: combination trifecta, Admiral Nelson, Creative Force, Talbot

2.25 Coronation Stakes Group 1 1 mile
Because the Royal Ascot authorities had to shunt around this week's running order it means two of the top summer mile races for 3yo are now being run on the same day today. This one is for the fillies who haven't had terribly long to get over their exertions from the various Guineas Classics run a couple of weeks ago.

Win: Quadrilateral
Each-way: So Wonderful

3.00 St James's Palace Stakes Group 1 1 mile
Basically the equivalent of the Coronation Stakes but for the colts. Pinatubo went into the 2,000 Guineas with a massive reputation but came up a little short on that occasion. Can he make amends today?

Win: Wichita
Each
-wayRoyal Dornoch

3.35 Diamond Jubilee Stakes group 1 6 furlongs
Mid-summer sprint highlight. Relatively light on runners this year but a fascinating contest nonetheless.

Win: Sceptical
Each-way: Shine So Bright

4.10 Wokingham Handicap 6 furlongs
One of the top mid-summer sprint handicaps. Did we learn anything from today's opening race? Will high-drawn runners have a slight edge by staying close to the stands' side running rail?

Win: Summerghand
Each-way: Spanish City, Stone Of Destiny
Game-changer: combination exacta, Summerghand, Spanish City, Stone Of Destiny

4.40 Queen Alexandra Stakes 2 miles 5 and a half furlongs
The longest race in the flat racing calendar. Stamina will doubtless be at a premium, although a relatively small field means the race might not be run at quite its usual end-to-end gallop.

Win: Who Dares Wins
Each-way: Nate The Great
